Phuthaditjhaba is the largest town in the Maluti-a-Phofung municipality and was established as the administrative capital of the former QwaQwa homeland, a Basotho-designated area created under apartheid. It sits at the foot of the Maluti Mountains, with dramatic sandstone cliffs and peaks rising directly behind the town, close to the Free State border with Lesotho. The area is closely tied to Basotho heritage, reflected in nearby sites such as the Basotho Cultural Village, and hosts a campus of the University of the Free State. Its proximity to Golden Gate Highlands National Park makes it a natural stop for visitors exploring the eastern Free State's mountain scenery.
Phuthaditjhaba's spring calendar opens with the QwaQwa Radio Mother And Daughter Event at Phuthaditjhaba Park, before adventure seekers head into the mountains for the Tugela Falls Adventure over 29-30 August. Festival season builds through September, starting with TSHESENG SPRING FEST at Thibella Stadium and continuing at Ha Tladi Mokgorong Bring & Braai for the Ha Tladi Mokgorong Spring Festival. Music rounds things out later in the month when the Qwa-Qwa Maskandi Festival 1st Annual takes over Phuthaditjhaba Stadium.
