About Sasolburg

About Sasolburg

Sasolburg was purpose-built in the early 1950s around Sasol's first coal-to-liquid fuel plant, the world-first Fischer-Tropsch synthesis operation that turned Free State coal into petrol and paraffin and gave the town its name and its reason for being. It sits on the Vaal River in the Metsimaholo local municipality, close to the Vaal Triangle industrial belt, and its street layout and suburbs still reflect the planned company-town design laid out for Sasol's workforce. Decades later the sprawling Sasol One petrochemical complex remains the town's visual and economic anchor, alongside newer residential nodes like Vaalpark that back onto the river for boating and fishing. The Vaal's water sports and the nearby Vaal Dam give the town a recreational side that balances its heavy-industry identity.
