About Alberton

About Alberton

Alberton is one of Ekurhuleni's older residential and commercial towns, established in the late 19th century and named after early landowner Alwyn Bester's wife, Elizabeth Albertina. It grew steadily as a satellite of Johannesburg, developing its own municipal identity before being absorbed into the greater Ekurhuleni metropolitan area, and today it functions as a well-established suburb with its own town centre, industrial zones and residential neighbourhoods stretching toward New Redruth and Meyersdal. The Alberton Rugby Club and the Newmarket Lifestyle Centre are among its social hubs, and Rietvlei Zoo Farm nearby offers a rare patch of rural green space close to the East Rand's built-up sprawl. Its location between Johannesburg and the Vaal has made it a convenient middle ground for commuters and small businesses alike.

What is on in Alberton

Alberton's dance floor stays busy with Salsa Thursdays running weekly at La Parada Newmarket Lifestyle Centre through the end of the year. Food fans should head to Coco Venue for THE PORRA FESTA over the last weekend of August, while Jackson Dam hosts the colourful Stars Colour Festival in early September. Runners have two dates worth diarising: the 10th Annual #SilentWalkAndRun2026 in mid-September and the Sun 08 Nov Alberton Road Race Alberton Gauteng Half Marathon 10km 4km in November. Rugby also gets a look-in when Namibia vs Barbarians Powered by Recklessbear kicks off at Alberton Rugby Club in November.
