About Gauteng

Gauteng is South Africa's smallest province by area but its economic core, generating roughly a third of national GDP out of a metropolitan sprawl that grew up around the gold reef of the Witwatersrand after 1886. Johannesburg remains the country's financial capital and home to the JSE, while Pretoria, a short drive north, serves as the seat of the national executive. The Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage fossil site including the Sterkfontein Caves, sits on the province's western edge, and Soweto's role in the 1976 uprising and the anti-apartheid movement still shapes the city's identity. OR Tambo International Airport, also within the province, is the busiest airport on the African continent.

Theatre leads Gauteng's calendar this month, with Sarajevo running at Theatre On The Square, Sandton through 22 August and A Good House staged at the Mannie Manim inside The Market Theatre into late August. The South African State Theatre follows with Kaleidoscope taking the stage from 28 July into September. Art lovers can catch MOWA at the Everard Read Gallery in Rosebank, on show from early August through mid-September. For sport, rugby fans can commit to the province-wide season with the Lions 2026/27 Season - Full Season at 10bet Ellis Park.
