About Kempton Park

Kempton Park is an East Rand town in Gauteng built around the presence of OR Tambo International Airport, sub-Saharan Africa's busiest airport, which sits within its municipal boundary and anchors a local economy of aviation, logistics and conferencing. The town played a pivotal role in South Africa's transition to democracy: the multi-party CODESA negotiations were held here at the World Trade Centre in 1991 and 1992, laying groundwork for the country's first democratic constitution. Originally laid out on farmland in the early twentieth century, Kempton Park grew rapidly once the airport expanded from the 1950s onward, and today it is home to the Emperors Palace casino and convention resort, one of Gauteng's largest event venues. It remains a mixed residential and industrial town, with suburbs like Norkem Park and Birchleigh sitting alongside airport-driven business parks.
