Krugersdorp, now the seat of Mogale City on Gauteng's West Rand, grew up around gold mining in the 1880s and sits at the edge of the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the Sterkfontein Caves, where some of the world's most significant hominin fossils, including the famous "Mrs Ples" skull, have been unearthed since the 1930s. The town lies among dolomitic ridges and cave systems that make the broader region one of the richest palaeoanthropological sites on Earth, drawing researchers and visitors to Maropeng and the surrounding reserves. Krugersdorp's more recent character is shaped by NIROX Sculpture Park, an outdoor art venue on a former dairy farm in the Cradle that has become a significant destination for contemporary art and live jazz events. Beyond its heritage sites, the area retains reserves such as the Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve and mixes mining-town history with a growing role as a weekend destination for Johannesburg residents.
