About Vereeniging

About Vereeniging

Vereeniging was founded in 1892 on the banks of the Vaal River, its Afrikaans name meaning "union" or "association." It became internationally significant in 1902 as the site where the Treaty of Vereeniging was signed, ending the Anglo-Boer War. The town anchors the Vaal Triangle, a heavily industrialised belt built on coal, steel, and chemicals, home to plants linked to ArcelorMittal and nearby Sasol operations. Away from industry, the Vaal River itself is a major draw, with the Vaal Dam and its resorts and marinas supporting boating, fishing, and weekend leisure for the wider region.

What is on in Vereeniging

Combat sports take centre stage first with the Vaal Toyota Kickboxing Cup IV, followed a couple of weeks later by the genre-crossing Lekompo La Vaal Music Experience. Comedy fans won't want to miss BIGGY! at Die Veiling Vereeniging, a night promising big laughs. Country and Afrikaans music lovers can look forward to Dirk van der Westhuizen live at the Barnyard, and the town rounds out the season with VAAL DAY, a full day of festivities at the Vaal Show Grounds. Between sport, comedy, music and community festivals, Vereeniging's calendar has something for almost everyone.
