Durban is South Africa's busiest port city and the hub of KwaZulu-Natal, its warm Indian Ocean waters and long Golden Mile beachfront making it the country's most popular domestic beach destination. It has the largest population of people of Indian descent outside India itself, a legacy of indentured labourers brought to work the sugar cane fields from 1860 onward, and that heritage shows up strongly in the city's food, from bunny chow to its many temples and mosques. Durban's harbour is the busiest in Africa, underpinning much of the surrounding province's economy, while Moses Mabhida Stadium and the uShaka Marine World waterfront have become modern landmarks. The city was also a co-host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and regularly hosts major surfing and sporting events tied to its coastline.
Durban's event calendar this week opens with TEDxDurban Summit 2026 bringing ideas-driven talks to ONE Tamarind, while film lovers can catch the Power24 International Film Festival unfolding over the weekend at Southern Sun Garden Court on South Beach. Music fans have plenty to choose from, from the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra 2026 Early Spring Symphony Season Concert 2 at the Playhouse Opera Theatre to New Zealand soul artist Teeks: Live in Durban at The Station in Stamford Hill. Later in the month, the citywide The Music Imbizo 2026 festival takes over the UNISA Durban Campus with four days of performances. Sport, dance and market events round out the month for those looking beyond music and film.
