About Modimolle

Modimolle sits in the Waterberg region of Limpopo, on the N1 roughly midway between Pretoria and Polokwane, and carried the name Nylstroom for over a century after Voortrekkers likened the pyramid-shaped hills around the town to Egypt and named the local stream the Nyl. The town was renamed Modimolle in 2003, a Sepedi word usually translated as "place of the spirits," referencing the flat-topped mountain overlooking the town where a local chief is said to have been killed. It anchors a farming district built on citrus, tobacco and cattle, and doubles as a gateway to the game farms, guest lodges and biosphere reserve that make the wider Waterberg a popular bushveld getaway. The historic Dutch Reformed church and old Nylstroom station buildings still mark out its farming-town core.

Modimolle's events calendar opens with Nylstroom Mark and the Modimolle Run4Hope Challenge 2026 both taking place on 22 August, giving early risers a market to browse and a run for a good cause. The same weekend also features the GRAVEL RACE Sat 22 Aug 2026 @ Modimolle, Limpopo for cyclists chasing a scenic route through the Waterberg. Nightlife picks up in October when the 4th Annual R101 Lapeng Lifestyle All White brings an all-white dress code party to town. Closing out the year, MAKOMPONG FEST arrives at Ephraim Mohale Stadium in December as one of the district's bigger festival dates.
