About Klerksdorp

About Klerksdorp

Klerksdorp lies on the banks of the Schoonspruit and Vaal rivers in the North West province, and owes its founding to a 19th-century gold rush that made it one of South Africa's earliest goldfields before Johannesburg eclipsed it. The Klerksdorp goldfield later found new life through deep-level mining in the 20th century, and the town remains linked to nearby Orkney and Stilfontein as part of a historic mining belt. Beyond mining, Klerksdorp is known for the mysterious Klerksdorp spheres, naturally formed rock concretions found in the area that have drawn geological curiosity for decades. Today it functions as a regional commercial and agricultural hub for the surrounding maize-farming district, with the Klerksdorp Auditorium and Klerksdorp Recreation Centre serving as its main gathering venues.
