Rustenburg sits at the foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range and is the economic engine of the North West province, built on the world's richest known reserves of platinum group metals. Mines run by Impala Platinum and other operators employ tens of thousands in the surrounding area, and the city also serves as the gateway to Sun City resort and the Pilanesberg National Park, both a short drive away. It is home to the Royal Bafokeng Nation, whose royal capital of Phokeng lies just outside town and whose stadium has hosted top-flight football and World Cup matches. Founded in 1851, Rustenburg is one of the oldest towns established by Voortrekkers in the former Transvaal.
Rustenburg's event season is anchored by the multi-day Glow Festival Rustenburg running from 20-23 August, alongside the Da Silva Academy Annual Concert at the Civic Centre on 27-28 August. Conference-goers can attend L Seminar GTN 2026: RADIANT at ATKV-Buffelspoort from 28-30 August, while music fans have the Basha Cultural Celebration (Bojanala Concert) at the Civic Centre on 29 August. The same weekend brings the Willerste Noord-Weste Lente-Fees market at Ned. Herv. Gemeente Rustenburg-Suid, plus comedy with the Joey Mekoa One Man Show-2nd Edition at Ben Marais Hall. Together these events give Rustenburg residents a dense spread of festivals, concerts, markets and comedy across the last two weeks of August.
