About Northern Cape

The Northern Cape is South Africa's largest but least populated province, a vast expanse of Kalahari savanna and Karoo semi-desert where the Orange River carves the deep gorge at Augrabies Falls before crossing into Namibia. Kimberley, the provincial capital, grew up around the Big Hole, the hand-dug diamond mine that sparked South Africa's mineral revolution in the 1870s and is still one of the largest excavations ever dug by hand. In Namaqualand, the arid coastal belt bursts into a carpet of orange and white daisies each spring, drawing flower-season tourists to towns like Springbok, Okiep and Nababeep, former copper-mining centres from the 19th century. The province's clear, dark, low-light-pollution skies have made it a global hub for astronomy: Sutherland hosts the Southern African Large Telescope, the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere, and the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope is under construction near Carnarvon.
