Cape Town sits beneath Table Mountain at the meeting point of the Atlantic and False Bay coastlines, a setting that has shaped it since it was founded in 1652 as a Dutch East India Company resupply station on the sea route to Asia. It is South Africa's legislative capital, home to Parliament, and its oldest city, with a layered history visible in the Bo-Kaap's colourful houses, the Castle of Good Hope, and Robben Island just offshore in Table Bay.
