About Darling

Darling is a small farming town roughly 75 kilometres north of Cape Town on the Swartland's edge of the West Coast, founded in 1853 on the old Langfontein farm and named for Lieutenant Governor Sir Charles Henry Darling. It is best known for its wildflowers, celebrated each September at the Darling Wildflower Show, an event held nearly every year since 1917, and for the Tienie Versfeld Wildflower Reserve on its outskirts. The town also has an outsized cultural profile for its size: satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys has run the Evita se Perron cabaret theatre and restaurant here for decades, and the Darling Music Experience brings classical and popular concerts to this rural setting. A dairy company and, more recently, a wind farm between Darling and the coast at Yzerfontein round out an economy still rooted in farming.

Darling's satirical stage stays busy, with Evita@90 - 22 August 2026 running at Evita se Perron. Runners and cyclists take to the wildflower routes for the Darling Brew Trail Wildflower Dash 2026, and come September the town's flowers take centre stage at the Darling Wildflower Show 2026 at Darling Club. Classical crossover arrives with Wildflowers and Opera at the Darling Presbyterian Church, while later in the year Creedence - A Clearwater Revival Tribute at Darling Cellars brings a tribute act to the wine estate. From satire to song to spring blooms, Darling's small-town calendar punches well above its weight.
