Plettenberg Bay, known locally as Plett, is a Garden Route town in the Western Cape backed by the Tsitsikamma foothills and fronted by the Robberg Peninsula, a nature reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site whose caves have yielded some of the earliest archaeological evidence of modern human life on the southern African coast. The bay itself is a noted whale and dolphin route, with southern right whales regularly seen close to shore during their winter and spring breeding season. Beacon Island and the Keurbooms River lagoon and estuary are local landmarks, and the town has long served as an upmarket holiday destination for visitors from Cape Town and Gauteng, particularly over the December season. Its economy today rests on tourism, hospitality and a cluster of boutique wine estates in the surrounding Crags and Redford areas.
Market regulars can head to the Harkerville Saturday Village Market on the N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay for weekly stalls of local crafts and food. Motoring and lifestyle fans are drawn to Land Of The Low (Automotive & Lifestyle) Festival DAY PASS at A Forever Resort, while trail runners circle late September for The Robberg Express - 2026 along the reserve's coastal paths. Comedy takes the stage in November with A Night of Comedy with Alan Committie - Plett at the White House Theatre, and the town's biggest end-of-year gathering, Plett Rage 2026, brings a week of beach-based festivities to Main Beach as summer arrives.
