The bay itself is a noted whale and dolphin route, with southern right whales regularly seen close to shore during their winter and spring breeding season. Beacon Island and the Keurbooms River lagoon and estuary are local landmarks, and the town has long served as an upmarket holiday destination for visitors from Cape Town and Gauteng, particularly over the December season. Its economy today rests on tourism, hospitality and a cluster of boutique wine estates in the surrounding Crags and Redford areas.
