About George

George is the largest town on the Garden Route, lying in the shadow of the Outeniqua Mountains between the coast and the indigenous forests that once fed a substantial timber industry. Founded in 1811 and named after King George III, it is one of the older towns in the Cape and its George Museum documents that timber and railway heritage, including the old Outeniqua narrow-gauge steam line. The town is also a golfing destination, anchored by the Fancourt estate, and its airport is the main air gateway to the wider Garden Route. Surrounding villages like Wilderness and the Outeniqua Pass connect George to some of the region's most scenic drives.

George's Garden Route line-up opens with the MRC x CRL rugby & netball expo at Protea Park. Families can book into the Kiddies Cooking Class: Junior Chef Fiesta the same week, while the Outeniqua Family Market in George keeps weekends busy. Runners have the Fancourt Marathon to train for, and cricket draws the biggest crowds when The Proteas vs Australia comes to town.
