About George

George is the largest town on the Garden Route, lying in the shadow of the Outeniqua Mountains between the coast and the indigenous forests that once fed a substantial timber industry. Founded in 1811 and named after King George III, it is one of the older towns in the Cape and its George Museum documents that timber and railway heritage, including the old Outeniqua narrow-gauge steam line. The town is also a golfing destination, anchored by the Fancourt estate, and its airport is the main air gateway to the wider Garden Route. Surrounding villages like Wilderness and the Outeniqua Pass connect George to some of the region's most scenic drives.

George's event line-up spans festivals, food and theatre over the next few months. Music fans can head to Maskandi Fest George on 22 August, followed a week later by Winter Wine at Fancourt 2026 for wine tastings at the estate. September brings The Ultimate RNB & Jazz Festival to Outeniqua Park Rugby Stadium, while runners can lace up for the Fancourt Marathon in mid-October. Theatre-goers have Chicago The Musical to look forward to when it opens at George Arts Theatre in late October.
